Playoff Solo Trip!
Matagorda, Texas

I had some friends that were going to fish ALL night with lights @ the 521 bridge pier but they packed it in around midnight. I wanted to fish the surf in Matagorda anyway but with the temptations of lights got me to get there sooner than planned. Fortunately I had brought my lantern so I headed to a little honey hole along the river near the mouth of the river. I set up my rods and before I was able to sit down I had a good run. It managed to be a good-sized 40" or so big ugly and while I was fighting this fish my small rod takes off. I land the first fish and threw him back quickly to fight the other fish on my small pole. I eventually get the upper hand on her and get her to the pier and land it. This took a while and I wanted to get the fish back to the water as quickly as possible. After releasing I realize that with all the excitement I had not taken a picture of either fish. Dang it!!! Did I mention that it was around 3:15 in the morning and I was fishing alone because my partner had a play-off game to attend even though he was injured during the last game of the regular season? the rest of the night was pretty uneventful except for a couple of runs that ended on a dropped bait. Actually I believe they were smaller (keeper) fish hitting the crabs set out. I hit the beach around 8 ish and started setting up the poles. While throwing out the third rod the first one bends over like it was going to break. After a good fight the first red was on the beach. Below are the rest of the fish caught that day. I was running around like a maniac! I did not rest until 2:30 that day and that was because I had to get a bite to eat. For each big fish I caught I must have caught 3-4 large gafftop. One went 26 inches and most were well over 18. They had to be big to take the size of bait I was throwing. I hate pictures of fish on the ground but I just had too.

I was looking into what I thought was dirty water and too my amazement it actually turned out to be thousands of little fish. I expected something to start eating them but nothing ever did. After further investigation I notice they were what we call yellow perch. I really never had any luck using these for bait so I did not even try.

I was actually walking amongst the fish. It was very cool![:D]

Total catch was 7 redfish and 3 big Uglies. I also had one break off which I actually think was a shark??? I thank GOD for this awesome day to be on the water.
